Dr. Sonia Tao-Yi was born in Norman, Oklahoma, but moved to Abu-Dhabi, United Arab Emirates at the age of two. During the summer before her senior year in high school, she was visiting relatives in Texas when the Gulf War started. For safety concerns, her family decided that it was best if she remained in Texas to finish her last year of high school.

Dr. Tao earned her undergraduate degree from the University of California at Berkeley, followed by dental school at the University of Detroit-Mercy, for which she received an Air Force scholarship. Following dental school in 1999, she obtained advanced training in General Dentistry in a year long residency program at Langley AFB.
After the residency program, Dr. Tao served in the USAF at Dover AFB, Delaware until 2002. She currently serves in the USAF Reserves. Following active duty, she worked with the Public Health Department in Delaware caring for underprivileged children and then in 2004 headed back to the Hampton Roads area.
She is a member of the Academy of General Dentistry and the International Association for Orthodontics and the Christian Medical and Dental Association (CMDA). It was through Dr Griffin’s ad in the CMDA’s national publication that Dr. Tao found out about a position in his practice. “I was looking for a God-centered practice that delivered top-notch dentistry in a caring and compassionate way and I found all these qualities in City Center Dental Care.” Though Dr. Tao enjoys all aspects of dentistry, she has a special interest in orthodontic treatment.
Dr. Tao and her husband have been blessed with 3 children and during her spare time she enjoys traveling, reading and athletics. Dr. Tao is an active member of the Peninsula Chinese Baptist Church where she teaches Children’s Sunday School and assists her husband with the youth group.
